Story
Trust Me
As the mountain pastures begin to grow, Herdwick ewes with lambs at foot begin their steady climb to the fell tops—and I follow. For the lambs, new to the world and full of wonder, it must feel like a Great Big Adventure. I captured this tender moment as an ewe led her lamb from the valley farm up Harter Fell. She paused just long enough to glance back with a soft bleat, as if to say, “Trust me, I’ve done this before.”
The tracks weave into narrow trods, branching across the high ground. Each ewe knows her route without hesitation. Soon, the flock disperses across the fell, each mother settling on her native patch—her heaf. There, she fusses over her lamb and warns off any strangers. And so, the rhythm of Lakeland continues—ancient, instinctive, and full of beauty.
