Ian Lawson - From the Land

From The Land | The Outer Hebrides

The Landscape and Loom, the Hebrideans & Harris Tweed

The Outer Hebrides is a place that reveals itself slowly. You arrive with expectations, but they quickly dissolve into something deeper—something felt rather than explained. In making this book, I spent long days among the islanders: generous people living close to land and sea, whose quiet strength is matched only by their pride in gaelic heritage.

There were sheep gathers and get togethers in croft kitchens where warmth came not just from the stove, but from stories shared across the table—tales passed down through generations. I stepped into loom-sheds and front rooms, where—by law—every Harris Tweed loom must sit, cloth woven at home, on the croft. The air was thick with the scent of wool and oil, alive with the rhythm of shuttle and cog. I also walked the land alone—across machair, moor, and beach—learning how light, weather and earth become collaborators in a photograph.

Over time, a pattern emerged. The textures and colours of the landscape began to echo the tweeds I saw being woven. What started as a photographic journey became something more layered—a visual portrait of a living tradition shaped by people and place.

'From the Land' is for those who love the Outer Hebrides, and for anyone who believes beauty and meaning are still found in the slow, the handmade, and the deeply rooted.

Herdwick | The Lake District

Native Spirit, Intimate Glimpses & Grand Landscapes

To know the Herdwick is to understand the Lake District itself. Born of the land, their connection runs deep, their lineage stretching back to Viking settlers, shaping both the landscape and the farming traditions that define Lakeland life.

For years, I have followed their secret paths through the high country, capturing their seasonal story in moments of quiet grace and raw beauty. Those who hold the Lake District close to their hearts will find Herdwick: A Portrait of Lakeland Vol. 2 to be the most inspirational photographic tribute ever created to these extraordinary sheep and the shepherds who tend them. The enduring spirit of one of Britain’s most beloved landscapes can now be seen through the eyes of its most iconic inhabitants.

Shepherdess | One Woman Farm

Heritage and wool, a Life Bound to Nature

Alison O’Neill is a shepherdess in the truest sense—shaped by the Dales, sustained by the land, and devoted to her home-bred flock. At Shacklabank Farm, she raises Rough Fell sheep in the old ways, meeting every challenge of modern hill farming with grit and grace. Her tenanted farm, passed down through generations, is the heart of her world—and through it, she lives with rare conviction and purpose.

This book is my tribute to her life and work—a heartfelt photographic account captured over years and across the seasons. From lambing nights and haytime jeopardy to hedgerow walks, wool clips, and frozen pipes, this is a story of pride, vulnerability, and strength. Within these large-format pages, you won’t find the polished gloss of romantic pastoralism, but something far more enduring: a characterful woman deeply rooted to the land she loves.

The pages turn with resilience and joy, with quiet moments and gritty labour. You’ll meet Alison as I did—between chores in the lambing shed, out on windswept hills with her flock, or pouring Yorkshire tea beside an ancient wood-burning stove. It’s a book of epiphanies, laughter, loss, and the simple, daily grace of a life well lived.

To own 'Shepherdess' is to honour the spirit of a remarkable woman—and to draw comfort and inspiration from a way of life that still holds meaning in today’s world.

Follow Our Journey

I simply want to connect with the kind of people who value what I value-beautiful landscapes, traditional ways of life, and the craftsman- ship that turns a photograph into something lasting.

Much of my work life happens out in the field-whether it's the Herdwick fells of the Lake District, the Harris Tweed-woven landscapes of the Outer Hebrides, or a hill farm from the Yorkshire Dales. I've met many of you by chance out there, and many more at exhibitions, where our conversations revealed a shared love for these places and the stories they hold.

And I'm rarely alone out there. My collie sheepdog, Mac, has been at my side for nearly a decade-my full-time work and life partner. He's more than just company. Sheep, wool, the land and the life upon it-all are at the core of my photography. And so is he. We've not spent more than an hour apart in ten years. I know just how lucky I am.

If you're drawn to quiet stories, wild places, and beautiful craftsman- ship, I'd love to have you along. Instagram and Facebook are where you'll find me.
