A great Herdwick.
This photograph captures one of my all-time favourites, met on one of my many self-assignments. Funny how, in the early days of the project, every Herdwick sighting set the pulse racing. But as time passed, it took something truly exceptional to stop me in my tracks. This one did exactly that.
Some tups simply have it—presence, stature, the look of a flock father. Effortless in pose, fleece catching the morning air, horns perfectly curled, eyes bright with intent. A Herdwick in his prime. A living portrait of strength and lineage, shaped by over a thousand years of breeding in the Lakeland fells.
It’s November, and tupping time has arrived. This is the true beginning of the shepherd’s year—the cycle renewed, new blood introduced, and the quiet hope of lambs to come with the turning of spring.
