Story
Heathery Flanks
Late summer, and the high fells are alive with colour—the purple flush of heather stretching across the ridges like a breath held in bloom. It’s a time of richness before the turning season, and a joy to witness.
Up here, a privileged few Herdwick ewes still wander among the flowering slopes, their grey fleeces brushed with mountain light, their presence as natural as the wind. These sheep, so deeply rooted in the hills, seem part of the landscape itself—weathered, watchful, enduring.
I climbed for the view, but the photograph came as a gift. Some days, light, place, and subject align in a way that asks nothing more than to be seen and felt. This was one of those moments—an ewe and her lamb, perfectly placed, framed by a valley of colour—the kind of moment that warms the memory… and does good that lasts beyond the day.
