Story
Drifting
From the top of this great dune— soft-blown by wind and time, I look across the jewel of Harris. The Atlantic shimmers deep blue below, and all around me, nature’s handiwork spills in every direction: marram grass waving in the breeze, white ponies grazing free, mountains rising behind a sky wider than my eyes can hold.
There’s nothing here but space to breathe, and that’s precisely why I return. It’s been over 20 years since I first stood here, when few others made their way to this remote corner. Today, the secret is out—but even with more visitors, the island’s wild heart holds firm.
This is still a haven: for birds, for sea-life, for the soul. I’m just one more creature drawn back, feeling that same pull of peace and perspective. A drifter, gladly adrift in beauty.
