Story
Mountain Solitude
It was May, and the twin lambs—still new to this vast, wild world—were making their first journey to the mountain heaf from High Birk Howe Farm in Little Langdale. Guided by their mother, they followed the old ways, stepping into their natural quarters high on the fell.
This little ledge—sheltered and rocky—offered the perfect place to pause. A quiet spot for rest and reflection beneath a classic mountain backdrop. Cool air drifted over the crags, and the beck below ran clear—timeless elements in a living, cultural landscape. Looking at this contented family group, I’m sure the Herdwicks sense it too.
The ewe-lamb bond runs deep. You often find them in the quieter folds of the fells, where life unfolds in peace. Soon the lambs will grow bolder, ready to explore. But for now, they stay close—learning the mountain’s ways from the one who knows them best.
I love this picture. For me, it captures nature and farming at their most instinctive—unforced, enduring, and quietly beautiful.
