Story
Hideaway
As a photographer drawn to the rhythm of fell farming life, my work takes me deep into Lakeland’s quieter corners. Of all the approaches into Buttermere, the road from Lorton remains my favourite. Each spring, as I head toward Gatesgarth Farm for the Herdwick lambing season, I glance across from Rannerdale Knotts to this secluded hideaway, nestled in the hug of the woods.
On this chilly spring morning, with mist and snow still clinging to the high fells,
It might seem a lonely life—but I’d be there in a heartbeat. A peaceful existence, shared only with Herdwick sheep and a few cows grazing by the shore of Crummock Water. No noise but nature’s own—wind in the trees, birdsong, and today, the flicker of light and shadow moving softly across the fellside makes it even more special a place. There’s a sense of spring’s anticipation—lambs arriving, buds still unfurling, colours new and untouched. It’s a privilege to witness Lakeland through my lens as it comes back to life—day by day, valley by valley.
