Story
A Wilder Life
On a spring morning ramble through Rannerdale, the bluebells flowed like water
beneath Whiteless Pike, circling old trees and painting the lower fells in a sea of soft blues. The sweet scent of hawthorn blossom drifted through the air, bracken just beginning to unfurl as I made my way down toward Crummock Water.
Then I stopped, held by the stare of a cautious Herdwick ewe and her twins. One lamb
mirrored its mother’s gaze, as if to say, you’re on our land. I kept my distance but was lucky to make this picture. Around us, more Herdwick mothers dotted the slopes, their grey coats and black lambs perfectly set among the bloom.
On days like this—soft skies above, colour returning to the land, and the presence of these fell-dwelling sheep—everything comes together. A brief, wild harmony.
