Enhancing the View
While the lakes and fells first caught my attention, it was the Herdwick sheep that won my heart.
What fascinates me most is how nature seems to shape the beauty of Lakeland around them. They’re not just part of the scenery—they enhance it. In this photograph, a Gatesgarth ewe with her lamb takes centre stage, her quiet presence transforming the Buttermere fells into something even more extraordinary. Without her, the landscape would be beautiful—yet somehow less complete. Sometimes, the great need the small to truly shine. She was bred by Robert Wilkinson of Gatesgarth Farm, Buttermere.
Connecting with the Herdwick landscape, I constantly remind myself that the actual value of my work lies not in the distance covered or summits reached but in the intricate details of the natural life encountered along the way and the reward of pausing to observe, listen, and feel the magic of this magnificent Lakeland world.
