Story
Where You Belong
A Thorneythwaite Farm ewe surveys all she knows and loves—the high ground on Glaramara Fell above the wooded slopes of Borrowdale. At her side, a gimmer lamb follows her lead.
This is familiar territory. Here, mountain life is shaped by the rhythm of the seasons and the well-worn tracks of countless hooves. The process of hefting begins—instinct taking hold as the lamb learns where it belongs. No fences are needed. She will grow to know this place as her own and remain close to it all her life.
At this age, the lambs start to look a little spectacled as their colour shifts—born black, their faces slowly whiten, their fleeces turning chocolate brown by the hogg stage, and eventually grey as full-grown ewes. The Herdwick way made visible.
This stretch of fellside is more than just a grazing ground—it’s a living landscape. Here, flock and fell exist in quiet harmony, sustaining an ancient balance that has flourished for centuries.
