Story
Valley Road
I return to the same places time and again, watching them shift with the seasons and light. The lane to Seathwaite is one of those routes—a winding ribbon through the unspoilt heart of Dunnerdale, leading to Herdwick farms and familiar stories.
Autumn in Lakeland is among the finest times to be out. The low sidelight glances across the larches, setting them aglow in gold. I follow the quietest roads I can to reach the shepherds’ Meets—those treasured social gatherings where the best Herdwick stock from the valley farms go head-to-head for prizes, and where tradition still holds firm.
To some, it’s just a country lane. But to us Lakeland lovers, it’s something more—a way in, a way back. I love how these roads have grown with the land, meandering to touch the old farmsteads they’ve served for centuries. Time seems to pause along their course.
A view for all seasons. A road worth travelling.
