Story
Brief Encounter
Photographing Herdwicks on the fells is never easy—success depends on patience, luck, and timing. I was out on assignment, sharing a quiet lunch break with Mac, my collie, when a fine-looking Herdwick crested the rise just ahead of us.
We spotted each other at the same time—equally surprised, eyes locked. I whispered, “Steady, lad,” and Mac held his position, composed as ever. My camera was at my side—three quick clicks, and I had it: the gaze, the stance, the sense of belonging high above Buttermere and Crummock Water. Moments later, the fell wanderer turned and moved off, unbothered and undisturbed.
I later recognised his smit markings—he was a two-year-old wether from Seathwaite Farm, bred by Peter Edmondson. That brief encounter, that perfect alignment of sheep and scenery, reminded me exactly why I do this work. Herdwicks are never just part of the view—they are the view.
