Ian Lawson presents three beautifully imagined XL Art Books. All the way through the photographer's journey, from dreams and desires to realisation. Blending documentary and landscape genres, Ian's work weaves together evocative picture stories from the Outer Hebrides, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.
I place my tripod above the breaking waves and soak up the spray from the uncertain safety of solid ground, enjoying the salty sea along a singing shore. With a slow shutter required, I’m waiting for a certain diffused light, one that will open up the tonal range. Photographs like this often have a habit of making the sea look much calmer than it really is. Believe it or not, here I am at the mercy of an eight-foot swell, keeping wary as the waves barrel, blur and break into shadow with every crest and decay.
