Belle, the Eriskay pony, caught my eye the very first time I walked the white headlands of Luskentyre. With the light fading behind her, she seemed to emerge from the sea itself. I watched her cross the beach and pass through an ocean of moving grasses. Later, I was aware of her presence whenever I climbed the dunes to catch a sunset or watch dawn
break. Sometimes I followed her soft hoof prints across a ridge and down into a sweep of deserted dunes. Occasionally, I came across her sleeping in a hollow of cropped grass scented with mountain thyme.
