IMMERSE YOURSELF IN A LANDSCAPE AND CULTURE

It’s rare when someone’s artistic interpretation of the world around us accurately represents the reality itself. It’s a rarer thing, when the art that someone is compelled to make not only captures that reality, but absolutely and completely surpasses it.

The images Ian Lawson makes, the world he captures, the stories he tells, immerse you in a landscape and a culture that feels nothing short of magical. Having traveled to Scotland and having explored the Inner Hebrides, I can testify to the strength and the power of this world, but after viewing Ian’s book, Saorsa, I understand just how much I am missing having not yet seen the Outer Hebrides. His work, his stories, have solidified that land as a place I must visit, a home I have not yet found.

JUST FABULOUS!

Even if you weren't in love with the Outer Hebrides before (if such a thing were possible), you will be after reading this. The evocative photography in Saorsa visually weaves together the land, the fabric and the folk. Very highly recommended.

WEAVING MAGIC

In his sumptuous book, Saorsa - one of the most remarkable photographic records of Scotland ever produced – Ian Lawson chronicles how the wild lands, seas and people of the Hebrides find common expression in the traditional craft of weaving.

EXTRAORDINARY BOOK

Dear Ian, I am presently half way across the Minch after seeing your work and buying your book at Morven Gallery. I can barely contain my childish excitement at your extraordinary book. I am delighted and envious of your project in equal measure.

EXTRAORDINARY BOOK

Dear Ian, I am presently half way across the Minch after seeing your work and buying your book at Morven Gallery. I can barely contain my childish excitement at your extraordinary book. I am delighted and envious of your project in equal measure. I had long wondered whether Gus Wylie would ever revisit his 70's monochrome photo journey to the Hebrides.

Your images take his endeavor to a new level albeit orientated about a different theme. I can only applaud your patience in waiting for the magical Hebridean light to yield its hard-won and often momentary delights. I find nothing stylised in the biographical shots and for those of us who tread the machair and sands as frequently as work and kids permit, the images distill the essence of the landscape whose elements remain to the fore within us weeks after we return.

You are to be congratulated for the commitment embodied in the book and the pleasure which it will bring. I do not think there is any "page filler" despite the size of the volume. Even if you are not a Hebridean obsessive, if people buy only one photography book this decade, it should be this for a multitude of reasons.

BEAUTIFUL BOOK

This is simply the most beautiful book I have ever seen. The photographs are out of this world. I would gladly frame many of them and put them on my walls. If you get get this thru Amazon, go to Ian Lawson's website and buy it from him directly (yes, you can). I own a personal library with thousands of books, this one is special. Just so beautiful.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE OF THE WESTERN ISLES

When I stumbled about Ian’s new work “Saorsa” in late 2018, I thought it would make the perfect Christmas gift for my husband. And so it was. We will always carry the memories of the Western Isles in our heart, but the books by Ian are invaluable visual reminders in the most perfect way.

There is nothing better than a miserable Sunday back home which provides the ideal opportunity to browse through his wonderful photography. It is impossible to describe his works, you have to see and experience for yourself. Every page leaves you in simple awe and inspiration. Ian, thank you so much for sharing your unconditional love of the Western Isles with the world. We will always hold your books in highest regard.

A MAGICAL BOOK

The most expensive book I have ever bought but worth every penny & more. I can't add much to the erudite & heartfelt comments already posted but this is truly inspirational. We live in a hyperbolic world but this is WONDERFUL! I bought it on Harris & love the Outer Hebrides but even if I'd never been this book would be magical. The colour, texture and landscape links are breathtaking. A work of genius. You'll have gathered I quite like it.

50 YEAR LOVE AFFAIR

I know many people who cannot understand the draw of the Highlands and Islands, but they don't have it under their skin, in their blood yet. For me it has certainly been a love affair for over 50 years, and I imagine that this next episode will do nothing but deepen it.

Thank you for your beautiful artwork, both words and images.

CAPTURES THE ARCHIPELAGO’S SOUL

Ian Lawson’s beautiful book is the result of many years patient work photographing the Hebridean islands. From the Land captures more than mere vistas, it has captured the archipelago’s soul.

A LIFE WORK

My English knowledge is far too limited to express my feelings and thoughts about Your book Saorsa. I absolutely respect and honour the amount of hard work, passion, care and taste having been put into this project. The point of view/perspective of all these pictures is so sensual and delicate.

A LIFE WORK

My English knowledge is far too limited to express my feelings and thoughts about Your book Saorsa. I absolutely respect and honour the amount of hard work, passion, care and taste having been put into this project. The point of view/perspective of all these pictures is so sensual and delicate. I am fascinated but most of all deeply touched by the way You are looking at the world / at Your motives which spread spirits of reflection and meditation.

The accompanying text widens one´s heart and mind being written in such a poetic style... Saorsa is a lifework and a gift to all lovers of photography (as well as nature, handcrafts and literature). I am a hobby photographer and still have to improve a lot but Saorsa offered me a sort of role model without following any stereotypes, so thank You very much.
